Almost every day, we are asked the question: What is the difference between the Garmin Fenix 5 and the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus? You get the answer in this article, where we compare the watches to find out if it is worth getting the more expensive Garmin Fenix 5 Plus.

In 2017, Garmin released the best multisport watch on the market, the Fenix 5, which replaces the popular Fenix 3. And no, there is no Fenix 4, apparently because it sounds like something less than ideal in Chinese… In the summer of 2018, the update, the Fenix 5 Plus, followed, which at first hand looks a lot like the Fenix 5. But there are some differences, and they are the ones we want to take a closer look at in the following.

GARMIN FENIX 5 and 5 PLUS – AN OVERVIEW OF THE MODELS

Both the Garmin Fenix 5 and the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus are really a collection of watches that you can get in physically different sizes and with smaller functional differences.

The Garmin Fenix 5 collection consists of:

- Garmin Fenix 5S

- Garmin Fenix 5S Sapphire

- Garmin Fenix 5

- Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire

- Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire

The Garmin Fenix 5 Plus collection consists of:

- Garmin Fenix 5S Plus

- Garmin Fenix 5S Plus Sapphire

- Garmin Fenix 5 Plus

- Garmin Fenix 5 Plus Sapphire

- Garmin Fenix 5X Plus Sapphire

PHYSICALLY DIFFERENT SIZES

The Fenix 5S and the Fenix 5S Plus watches are physically the smallest and are best suited for narrow wrists. The diameter of the watches: 42 mm.

The Fenix 5 and the Fenix 5 Plus watches are medium in size and are best suited for medium wrist sizes. The diameter of the watches: 47 mm.

The Fenix 5X and the Fenix 5X Plus watches are the largest and are best suited for large wrists. The diameter of the watches: 51 mm. This is the same size as the Fenix 3, by the way.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SAPPHIRE AND THE NORMAL MODELS

The special Sapphire models are fashioned with sapphire glass that cannot be scratched unlike the normal models.

In the Fenix 5 collection, the Sapphire models also have WiFi (the normal ones do not), which makes the transfer of data from watch to smartphone a bit easier. But otherwise they are identical to the normal editions.

In the Fenix 5 Plus collection, all models have WiFi.

Arguments in favor of the garmin fenix 5 plus

You should pick a watch from the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus collection if you just want to have the most recent watch on the market, or if you cannot live without one of the functions or more (that you do NOT get with the Garmin Fenix 5 collection).

The new functions of the garmin fenix 5 plus are:

Garmin Music

Stores music directly on the watch, so that you do not need to take your smartphone or mp3 player with you to listen to music on the go. It can store up to 500 songs and play music from streaming services like Spotify and Deezer.

Garmin Pay™ Contactless payment

Contactless payment with the watch. Add a credit card to your watch and use it as contactless payment for the proper payment terminals.

Pre-installed TopoActive Europe map

The pre-installed TopoActive Europe map provides navigation directly on your watch for roads and paths in all of Europe. (This function is also available on the Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire).

Wrist-based OX sensor

A new sensor on the backside of the watch for measuring oxygen in your blood. A useful parameter to know – especially when you are up high in mountains or the like. (Only available in the Fenix 5X Plus Sapphire).

Improved GPS-tracking with GALILEO satellites

GPS is the American satellite system, GLONASS is the Russian satellite system, and GALILEO is the European satellite system. The whole Fenix 5 Plus collection now has access to the GALILEO satellites. By activating the GALILEO satellite system, you will now experience much more accurate navigation and measurements.

ARGUMENTS IN Favor of the garmin fenix 5

The price

The greatest argument in favor of picking a watch from the Fenix 5 collection instead of the Fenix 5 Plus collection is of course the price! You have to really appreciate the new functions for it to be worth upgrading. Mostly, the Fenix 5 collection has the same functions as the Fenix 5 Plus collection.

Better battery life

The addition of the Garmin Music and the map functions in the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus uses a lot of power. This means that the Garmin Fenix 5 and the Garmin Fenix 5S have a markedly longer battery life than their “big brothers” Garmin Fenix 5 Plus and Garmin Fenix 5S Plus. Only the Garmin Fenix 5X Plus Sapphire has a better battery life than the Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire.
