I recall when New Balance More v1 and v2 were released. They both had tall foam heights, a substantial amount of foam directly underfoot, and even firmer foam at the bottom for rigidity. They were shoes that few runners were particularly interested in. That changed when New Balance More v3 was released.
New Balance More v3 redefined what soft meant in the running shoe market. It was the ultimate comfort shoe for recovery and slow runs, and this design direction continued in New Balance More v4 and now More v5.
Soft and Stable - New Balance More v5
v5 has undergone significant changes, most importantly the midsole has been altered, which is undoubtedly the most defining feature of the More line.
After the 1080 v13 introduced a softer midsole than in More v4, it was clear that More v5 needed changes, otherwise
risked having two shoes that were too similar.
You will find the same super-soft
X introduced in 1080 v13, in the midsole of More v5. More v5 just has more foam both under and around the foot.
More v5 foam has more substance and also wraps the foot with massive sidewalls. Along with a truly massive platform, More v5 provides most runners with all the stability and softness they need.
The newer Fresh Foam X delivers a new type of running experience to More v5, with a bouncy feel. But, like all other iterations of Fresh Foam since its humble beginnings, Fresh Foam X's bounce fades after some initial runs. Ultimately, you get this cushioned mattress feel that keeps your feet comfortable and protected.
Slow and Steady - New Balance More v5
It may be obvious to some, but if you're looking for a light and fast shoe, look elsewhere. But, if you're here for one of the best and most comfortable maximally cushioned shoes to date, stay while I discuss which types of runs I think it works best for.
I've tried it on various types of runs, short and long, slow and fast, and New Balance More v5 is in no way a speed shoe. But when it works, it excels too!
On any slow run or recovery run, More v5 is a must for me from now on. The endless cushioning and stability mean I worry less about sore muscles or tired ankles. It's just a pleasure to run slowly in, especially on days when the muscles are sore.
Longer runs are also not problematic if they're at a slow to moderate pace. I ran a 15 km at my marathon pace without issues, demonstrating that
v5 surprisingly surpasses its bulky appearance.
Do not expect a fast shoe. Instead, expect a marshmallow-like road experience, a shoe that pampers your body with an abundance of cushioning.
Fit - New Balance More v5
The upper has been updated but doesn't feel too different from previous versions. It's made of a thin mesh, has nice padding around the heel, and features a tongue that's nicely padded and attached on both sides of the shoe for less movement during runs.
I rarely notice a warmer upper and have no issue with More v5's. However, the attachment of the tongue has introduced another mesh inside the forefoot, and this can make the shoe a bit less breathable on warmer days. Two layers are always less breathable than one, but in this case, two layers are also extremely comfortable.
The fit is somewhat boxy and not super snug. There's plenty of room for my toes to move, and it fits me in my usual size. But the More v5 fit is borderline short, so if you're between sizes, I'd suggest going up half a size.
Who Should Buy It? - New Balance More v5
Are you looking for a new daily training shoe that prioritizes comfort? Or are you searching for a recovery shoe that takes care of your feet? Or are you planning your first longer run and need a long-distance shoe that can take care of you when you go further than normal? Then More v5 is the answer!
It suits both beginner runners and more experienced athletes who want something specific from their running shoes.
However, it does not suit runners who like a ground feel or runners who want a bouncy and light shoe for their faster runs.
