Review: ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 - A minor update makes a big impact!

Sometimes a minor thing can make a big impact.

Last year the ADIDAS Adizero Boston 10 reinvented itself into a more modern daily trainer. Gone was the lower-to-the-ground boost midsole, and in came the higher stack midsole with more modern foam compounds.

In these max stack days, the ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 is situated right between the Adios and the Adios Pro in the ADIDAS Adizero lineup. It’s a lighter daily training shoe that can handle some faster paces, but that still has enough foam to feel comfortable on your longer runs.

In my opinion, the ADIDAS Boston 11 is the best and most versatile daily trainer that ADIDAS has to offer.

ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 - The Midsole

Just like last year’s model, the ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 has a high stack, dual-density midsole, with a top layer of the springy and soft Lightstrike Pro, and the bottom layer of the firmer Lightstrike foam. Even though there is a lot of foam underfoot, the midsole itself is more responsive than soft. The midsole together with some carbon-infused plastic rods makes for a surprisingly stable ride fit. I was a little scared with my wonky ankles, but the ADIDAS Boston 11 feels rock-solid when you are hitting a turn.  This makes it a great shoe for city and road running, and I wouldn’t be against taking it out on a gravel road either.

The ADIDAS Boston 11 can handle both fast and slow. But just as the rocker is more pronounced in the forefoot, the shoe also starts to shine when you speed up the pace and use that rocker more. It’s just a lot more fun to run in this shoe when the speeds get high.
I would gladly take this shoe out for those standard daily runs as well, but the shoe just rolls in a better way you pick up the pace.

The midsole also makes sense from a durability point of view. It sure would be fun to only have Lightstrike Pro in the entire midsole, but the Adios Pro has that. What that additional Lightstrike bottom layer does, is enhance the stability of the taller shoe and extend the durability of the shoe by quite a margin, making it an ideal partner to the Adios Pro for everyday training.

In my opinion, the ADIDAS Boston 11 is the best and most versatile daily trainer that ADIDAS has to offer. So, if you are looking for your new ADIDAS shoe, then the Boston 11 is a great option, especially if you want a shoe that can do it all, from fast to slow.

ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 - The Upper

A new thinner upper, with fewer bulky overlays, helps to increase comfort, and breathability, as well as decrease the overall weight of the shoe. This may seem like a small update, as people tend to focus on the midsole, but it really isn’t! The reduction in weight makes a world of difference, especially when your legs get tired on longer days, and you want your feet to feel fresh.

Just like the ADIDAS Adizero Adios 7, the new heel tab is added to the top of the heel. It’s a nice feature that mostly is there for aesthetic reasons, but the shoes certainly look stylish and distinct, with that little flick of fabric sticking out. The overall aesthetic of the shoe feels nice as well.

The upper feels much like the other uppers we have seen from the ADIDAS Adizero line. It is a very thin and breathable mesh, but it’s also a bit static. ADIDAS has minimized the padding around the heel and tongue down to the essentials. It still feels very comfortable on, but it slipped a bit in the heel on my first run, but that was quickly fixed when I switched over to some better socks.

ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 - The outsole

The ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 has that trusty continental on the entire outsole. It sticks to anything. It feels great in corners. Enough said.
There is a good amount of it, and that makes sense after the transitions towards being a shoe that should withstand daily training.

ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 - Summary

So overall this minor update of the ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 is in fact quite big! The right things have been adjusted, to make the shoe even more versatile as a lighter daily trainer without sacrificing durability.

Weight-wise it falls right in between the hugely popular New Balance 1080v12 (292g) and the great Saucony Ride 15 (254g). A nice spot if you want something that can be used every day.

If you are only looking for a shoe only for speed days, then the ADIDAS Adizero Adios 7 is the best choice. But in my opinion the ADIDAS Adizero Boston 11 is the jack of all trades ADIDAS shoe. It will shine if you want a lighter daily trainer that can turn up the heat on tempo days, and it might even be great for people who want a bit more cushion for race days as well.
