Light BOOST is here on the adidas Ultraboost light, and surprise, it is lighter. But what has really changed from the old BOOST to the new? We went to adidas HQ in Germany to figure it out. See the video below for the full story.
When the BOOST technology got introduced in 2013 on the Energy Boost it is safe to say that the running shoe industry changed. EVA was the preferred foam used for making running shoes, and eTPU pellets (BOOST) made running softer and bouncier than ever.
One year later, adidas proved how good this technology was, by making the adiZero adios Boost, the first shoe that broke the 02:04 barrier in a marathon.
Ten years later, the BOOST is still soft and bouncy, but since then the running world has changed. Now every brand on the market is showing off their "super foam," shoes as not as firm as they were, and adidas is not alone in having a comfortable foam with high energy return.
It is wrong to say that things stayed put in Germany though. adidas was hard at work, not only making a new iteration of BOOST, but also making different technologies that could tell different stories and give new properties to their running lineup.
Lightstrike was made to be light and durable. Lightstrike Pro was made to be extremely light and energy efficient, and the newly introduced Light BOOST was made to mix comfort and high durability. Together these foams give adidas the ability to add different characteristics to a running shoe, rather than making all shoes just feel the same.
With the emergence of the Light BOOST and the new adidas Ultraboost Light, adidas again shows what they are capable of by making a max cushioned shoe that now puts comfort and lightweight first.
But even though the Light Boost is the main story, there have been several new changes to the Ultraboost LIght if you compare it to the old version.
Most of this is actually told by one of the designers in the video above. But here is a short recap. The upper has been upgraded with the primeknit+ technology, the cage holding your foot (the three stripes) has been made softer and lighter, and the outsole and midsole have a more improved LEP technology (Linear Energy Point) to make the ride and toe-off better.
The original Ultraboost might have started it all. But the new Ultraboost Light has brought the Ultraboost line back stronger than ever.
