is the 28th version of a shoe that has been on the market for decades. It's not a model that gets much attention or makes wild promises to revolutionize your running experience. But after a few weeks with the shoe, I've thought about something: Maybe that's what makes it special?
Little Sister Stands on Her Own
For many years, I've thought of Cumulus as the little sister to Nimbus. Cheaper, simpler, and a bit less of everything. But after running in I've started to see it differently. The two models offer something different.
Nimbus is designed for maximum comfort. The soft landing, the feeling of floating. GEL-Cumulus 28 provides a different experience. There's still good cushioning from the FF BLAST MAX foam, which is soft and comfortable. But the shoe feels more controlled and stable. I feel secure on my feet, even when my legs are tired.
Cumulus 28 also feels more responsive. It returns energy in a way that makes it work for both easy runs and days when I want to pick up the pace a bit.

Just Put on Shoes and Run
My first run in was an easy 5K with my colleagues. A run focused on socializing and good conversations. Along the way, I didn't even think about what I had on my feet. And that might actually be what best describes Cumulus 28. It fit as it should, right from the first kilometer, with no need for adjustment or breaking in. Just put on shoes and run.
The upper in engineered mesh is soft and flexible, but holds the foot in place without feeling tight. I'd describe the toe box as normal. Not wide, not narrow, just normal. For me, it fits well. The toes have room to move, but the shoe doesn't feel loose. I'd rate ASICS GEL-Cumulus 28 as true to size. For perspective, I usually wear size 38 in New Balance, 38.5 in Saucony, and often fluctuate between 38 and 39 in ASICS' other models. Here, I tested a size 38, and it fits perfectly.
When It Needs to Go (a Bit) Faster
My second run was about 8 kilometers with intervals. Here I tested how the shoe handles pace changes. And it keeps up well. FF BLAST MAX provides good bounce when I land more on the forefoot, and the transition from easy pace to a bit faster running feels natural. The shoe doesn't become heavy or clunky, even when I pick up the pace. It's not a dedicated tempo shoe, that's clear. But for the runner without 15 pairs of running shoes on the shelf, it handles the task well.
Holds All the Way
Recently, I took
on a relaxed 15-kilometer Sunday run. Here the shoe showed another side. It continued to feel stable and comfortable. The cushioning holds all the way, the foot still sits securely, and there are no spots where it starts to chafe or irritate. A super reliable shoe that does its job well.
The Volvo of Running Shoes?
ASICS GEL-Cumulus 28 doesn't promise anything fancy. No carbon plate, no wild revolutionary technology, or claims to make you 10% faster. But think of it as the Volvo of running shoes. Maybe not the first shoe you point to in the store when seeking excitement, but the shoe you choose when you want something that works. Day after day, week after week.
For beginners, it's an obvious first shoe. Neutral, versatile, easy to get into. For experienced runners who want a partner for everyday miles, it works just as well. There's no break-in period or special tricks you need to know.
is for you who want a versatile daily trainer that handles most of the training without drama. A shoe you trust, whether it's short runs, long runs, or anything in between.
In a time when running shoes are becoming more and more specialized, there's something refreshing about a shoe that's just a good running shoe. Cumulus 28 is exactly that.
