TEST: Hoka Rocket X3 - The best of both worlds

The Hoka Rocket X3 is a comfortable race shoe, suitable for all distances.

Let me start by revealing that the Hoka Rocket X2 has been one of my absolute favorites for a quick 5 to 10 km. So, it was with a bit of apprehension that it was time for an update, wondering what would happen to my beloved Rocket X2? You're probably familiar with that feeling.

Like most brands, Hoka pairs their race category with a partner. In this case, we have Rocket X3 and Cielo X1 2.0. I don't think the two shoes are necessarily more suited to one distance or another, but they offer different cushioning and energy return. Rocket X is a simpler, more responsive race shoe, while Cielo X1 2.0 is wilder and bouncier.

With that little introduction, it’s time to dive into the direction Hoka has taken with their Rocket X3 race shoe.

Hoka Rocket X3 - Major upper changes

From the outside, there are some noticeable updates. Most prominent is the new upper made from a different material called Warp Knit. Warp Knit has more structure than the previous thin, less breathable synthetic mesh. Instead, it is very breathable, which is welcome.

I was one who really liked the old heel cap, which was ultra-flexible. It has now been replaced by a heel cap with a bit more hold and stability, but not too rigid, and I would say it matches the Rocket X3’s general expression well.

The tongue is made of a waffle material that sits loose in the shoe, allowing it to adjust perfectly to your foot.

Looking at the upper of the Hoka Rocket X3, I think the aesthetics resemble a training shoe. It’s deceptive, though, because once you slip your hand into the shoe, you notice how thin and fine the Warp Knit is. The more stable heel cap gives some performance benefits I think most will appreciate as the kilometers start to add up.

Fit of Rocket X3 is on the narrower side, and I would consider going half a size up. It’s not a recommendation for everyone, but especially for those on the edge, as the forefoot might feel slightly cramped.

Hoka Rocket X3 - "The table has turned"

Just one season ago, I would choose Hoka Cielo X1 for a fast shoe that wasn't too aggressive or unstable, but offered some extra fun underfoot. Now, it’s the opposite. Cielo X1 2.0 is wildly aggressive with a rocker that pushes you forward.

The same evolution has happened with Rocket X, but the other way. Where Rocket X2 was very “pushy” with rocker geometry for fast steps, Rocket X3 with its updated upper and less aggressive rocker offers a stable and comfortable ride.

Hoka Rocket X3 - How does it feel?

The midsole on Rocket X3 measures 40 mm at the heel and 33 mm at the forefoot, making the drop 2 mm higher than before. While not a big change, it suits the other updates in the shoe.

Hoka excels at making shoes that are fun to run in. Cielo X1 2.0, Mach X, and Rocket X3 are all enjoyable. On Rocket X3, the rocker geometry is placed slightly further back than before, resulting in a less aggressive forefoot roll.

The midsole still has plenty of pop, and if you own the previous model, you’ll find familiarity – which is entirely positive.

My experience is that Hoka Rocket X3 feels much more comfortable at different paces than before. It’s a reliable race shoe without too many frills. Don’t get me wrong, Rocket X3 still has plenty of speed. Hoka has just dialed back the wildness a bit, providing more calm. For me, this means Rocket X3 is now also a shoe to consider for longer races like a marathon (if you're daring enough to try, hehe).

        Hoka Rocket X3 - Conclusion

Roles have swapped in Hoka’s race category, and I think Hoka makes it easy for customers to choose the right shoe for their needs going forward.

Hoka Rocket X3 appeals to a wide range of runners, from those getting their first carbon shoes to experienced runners needing a stable and fast option for both training and races.

Hoka hits the mark with this update, and I look forward to spotting many runners in Rocket X3 on the roads, as it deserves it.
