New Balance Infinion 1080 v15 – The perfect balance?

A revolution is on the way from New Balance, and the first part of this revolution is the flagship among their daily trainers: New Balance 1080 v15.

It feels like just yesterday I started reviewing the 1080 running shoe series. I worked at a running specialist and tested version 6 – the very first Fresh Foam 1080 from New Balance . Now, here I am, 9 years later, feeling slightly older. I'm behind a computer writing about the newly launched New Balance Infinion 1080 v15, and it's the first time ever I'm writing about 1080 without Fresh Foam in the name.

Since then, Fresh Foam has evolved into much more. Fresh Foam X was introduced in the legendary 1080 v10 with the 3D-shaped heel design, and in 1080 v13 it evolved again becoming extremely soft and comfortable – with a more fashion-inspired look.

But one thing has always been somewhat the same: A Fresh Foam shoe always feels incredibly soft with a big, delightful bounce at the start. But over time, it settles, and the bounce, which nearly feels like a trampoline on the first runs, tends to become more tempered, ending in a softer, mattress-like feel. I find this has changed in New Balance 1080 v15.

Out with the old, in with Infinion – New Balance Infinion 1080 v15

The new foam sounds like it's taken straight out of a Back to the Future or Tron movie: INFINION. This is thus the first time New Balance uses supercritical foam in their everyday running shoes.

What is supercritical foam, you ask? It's when a gas like CO₂ or nitrogen is injected in the foam process, giving it unique properties in terms of bounce and durability. I know it sounds strange, but it works remarkably well.

This is quite an extensive change – almost a paradigm shift – from what the New Balance 1080 series has been. For loyal 1080 runners, it can be a major shift, but I don't think you'll be disappointed with what you get in this new model.

A balancing act – New Balance Infinion 1080 v15

The new INFINION midsole is supposed to be more resilient than their previous foam, meaning it retains its bounce and energetic feel for much longer. With this change, it seems New Balance wants the Infinion 1080 v15 to be a more versatile do-it-all shoe, capable of handling both long, easy runs and providing a faster experience when needed.

You could almost say it balances on the edge between slow and fast, and the balance should last longer than we've seen in other New Balance shoes.

Recently, I've started preparing for the London Marathon, and last week I had a base run followed by 6 longer strides at 10k pace. Overall, the run ended at 15 kilometers, and normally my go-to shoe for this type of session would be a super-trainer or a faster tempo shoe. But with the new midsole, I can actually use the new 1080. Because you get a shoe that provides a very comfortable running experience on the easy parts of the run and a slightly firmer and more energetic feel when you pick up the pace.

Another factor that makes this a balanced shoe, capable of handling many different types of runs, is the weight reduction. A lighter shoe will generally feel better to run in when you're running fast, and in the new Infinion 1080 v15, New Balance has managed to make the shoe lighter without sacrificing comfort.

As always, a shoe designed to be a comfortable everyday trainer will never feel as light and fast as a shoe built for speed. But in a running shoe market with so many “must-have” categories, it's nice to have a shoe that can simply do a bit more – and even do it in a satisfying and balanced way.

The upper – New Balance Infinion 1080 v15

The new shoe fits my feet really well. The toe box has enough room for longer runs, and the comfort is spot on. The double mesh upper is very pleasant to wear, and the padding is sufficient without being too much.

When it comes to breathability, I think the New Balance Infinion 1080 v15 hits a good balance, not making your toes too cold in winter, nor feeling too warm in summer. However, this is something I must wait to test, as it is currently very cold and wet in Denmark.

The only thing that isn't quite to my taste is the heel counter, which feels slightly low – particularly on the inside of the heel. I had no issues with heel slip during runs, but I know from experience that some runners don't like a shoe that is too low in this area.

In terms of length, New Balance 1080 v15 is true to size: I usually wear US 11, and it fits me perfectly here as well.

Pick and choose – New Balance Infinion 1080 v15

With the success of New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 and its impressive abilities as both a tempo shoe and everyday shoe, New Balance has three strong options that easily serve as your daily workhorse and companion to the New Balance SuperComp Elite v5 racer.

FuelCell Rebel v5 will, for many, be the obvious choice if you want a lighter shoe that handles faster runs better, but the new 1080 v15 now performs better at higher speeds and has a more durable construction. Therefore, despite a higher price, it will likely be a more economical choice in the long run. Especially if you enjoy long runs. Here, the stability and comfort in New Balance Infinion 1080 v15 really shine.

I love this new update – not only because the foam lasts longer and is more fun to run on, but also because More v6 and 1080 v14 have been a bit too close to each other in recent years.

    Now the choice is clearer:
If you want the softest shoe possible, choose New Balance Fresh Foam More v6 . If you want the more versatile everyday trainer – a shoe for both long and fast runs – choose New Balance Infinion 1080 v15. And if you are a lighter runner or want a shoe that is livelier and better for speed, then choose New Balance Rebel v5.

Whatever you choose, you get an amazing shoe that helps you feel great and have fun on your runs.
