Test: Saucony Triumph 21 - It just works!

You don't always need to make huge changes when a shoe works. Saucony hasn't done so with Triumph 21, yet the shoe is still excellent - and the changes have made it a bit better.

It's no secret that I have loved Saucony Triumph 20. I think it's excellent.

It hits a perfect combination of being cushioned, very comfortable, while still being the high-mileage trainer , I think provides the best "pop". PWRRUN+ foam in the midsole is in my opinion perfectly tuned, and the outsole design provides a really good grip on both asphalt and trails.

Saucony Triumph 21 - What's new?

So, how do you make it better for a new version of the shoe?

Saucony has chosen not to make massive changes. But the changes they have made are really good.

The biggest change is the upper design. It's made of a new woven mesh material that feels very durable and strong when you have Saucony Triumph 21 in your hands. But once you put the shoe on your feet, it feels different. If I have a small gripe with the previous version, Triumph 20, it's that I think the upper fits very snugly on the foot.

Saucony Triumph 21 - More airy - Still excellent

In Triumph 21, the feel of the upper is different. It doesn't fit quite as snugly on the foot, but in a comfortable way. The material is more airy and ventilating, which I think is really nice. I don't feel like any cushioning is sacrificed, but I only gain extra comfort by it being airier and breathable.

The midsole hasn't changed from before. It is still fabulously good. It hits the perfect combo of comfort, cushioning, "pop" and roll through the gait cycle.

PWRRUN+ foam is ideal for a high-mileage trainer, as it provides a lot of cushioning with a low weight, and it also lasts many kilometers (I've run over 1000km in Triumph 20 and there's almost no noticeable difference between that pair and a new pair).

When all is said and done, I think Triumph is still an absolutely excellent running shoe. It gives me everything I want in a high-mileage trainer. And more. If you want a high-mileage trainer with plenty of cushioning and "pop" underfoot, then take a look at Saucony Triumph 21.
