Test: ASICS GT-2000 10 - Complete makeover, but true to its heritage

Completely new build with new materials.

Anniversary, yay!

ASICS has clearly created a popular running shoe series with their GT-2000 . We have reached the tenth edition. And although the shoe is extremely popular, ASICS has not rested on its laurels and merely changed a few small things. They have actually given the shoe a makeover, yet they have managed to retain all the characteristics that define a GT-2000.

GT-2000 has always been a mild stability shoe with a lower weight, less soft midsole, and a lower price than its bigger sibling, Kayano . It still is, but the shoe has received a completely new build with new materials.

Different but similar

The biggest change from 9 to 10 is the midsole. Nearly everything has changed here. There's new foam, new stability technology, and a new 3D Space Construction. All significant changes, but I still feel I can sense the typical traits that should be in a GT-2000 .

In my opinion, the best upgrade is that the GT-2000 10 now features FlyteFoam Propel foam in the midsole. The foam is softer and lighter than the previous version's FlyteFoam. This has also allowed ASICS to include a bit more foam in the midsole. Therefore, you get a softer, lighter, and more responsive GT-2000 than before.

Another significant change is that the GT-2000 has altered how the stability support works. Previously, there was a plastic insert under the foot meant to guide your foot during stride, providing more support on the inside. Now, ASICS has removed the plastic and instead placed harder foam – through their 3D Space Construction technology and Lite Truss foam – on the inside of the shoe. The 3D technology is gender-specific, so women receive different support than men. Therefore, you get more natural and less controlling support, which will likely suit more runners.

Padded and snug

If you have run in an ASICS running shoe you might have noticed they make some lovely uppers. It's no exception with the GT-2000 10. The upper is made of knit material but padded in the right places, so it's soft yet breathable.

The fit is on the snug side, but the knit material expands around your foot, so you don't feel it pinching. Even though the upper is quite simple and there are no bands or overlays providing structure, I've only experienced my foot resting comfortably and securely in the shoe.

A familiar classic

The outsole is classic ASICS . There is plenty of rubber to give you grip and ensure the shoe can last many miles. The rubber material is AHAR+, which is ASICS' most durable rubber. Although it's a heavy material, I haven't felt the shoes are "bottom-heavy." In essence, there's not much to say about the outsole. It just works. Both in providing grip and lasting many miles.
