The first received a somewhat mixed reception. Many liked it for its lightness and speed, but some felt the midsole wasn't soft enough. In this second version, ASICS Magic Speed 2, it seems that has listened to the little criticism it received and created a shoe that remains fast but is now softer and more bouncy.
Overall, I think did a great job. The new FF Blast+ foam that ASICS has added performs well, and they've also included significantly more foam than before. Together with the slightly less rigid carbon-infused plate in the midsole, the shoe feels less aggressive than the first, yet just as fast.
However, when I jogged the first kilometers of warm-up, I couldn’t really feel it. It didn’t feel softer or bouncier. So, I was a bit worried about how my workout would go. But my nervousness and doubt quickly vanished. Because something happens when you pick up speed and push the shoe more. It comes to life, becomes faster, bouncier, and more exciting.
ASICS Magic Speed 2 – Sensible and fast
And it's quite a sensible tempo or racing shoe. There are shoes that are faster and softer, but with 2, you get a shoe that I expect can last around 800 kilometers without wearing out, yet it feels quite close to the very best racing shoes.
So what can the ASICS Magic Speed 2 do? Well, for starters, it’s pretty light – it weighs only 230 grams in my size (42.5 EU – US 9). Moreover, as mentioned earlier, it’s made with quite soft and bouncy FF Blast+ foam. It's one of the liveliest and bounciest foam materials on the market right now, excelling because it is fresh, fast, and quite durable. The drop has also been increased slightly, now at 7mm, compared to 5mm in the first version, and there’s more foam underfoot.
It also features a new improved upper that is breathable and ensures your foot is securely held in place. It’s quite similar to the first upper, but it’s a bit roomier in the forefoot. The outsole is designed with rubber in selected areas for grip and added durability, while exposing the midsole in others, which may result in slightly more wear in those areas.
ASICS Magic Speed 2 – Is it for you?
has also incorporated its Guidesole geometry into . This technology is their take on a rocker that makes you almost tilt forward when you lean into the shoe, aiding in easier foot transitions.
I think it’s a very sensible for runners who want something light, fast, and durable. If you want a quick shoe that is solid and has excellent fit control, you should consider ASICS Magic Speed 2. I plan to use it for tempo runs in the coming months.
And if I return to the initial question, is the ASICS Magic Speed 2 truly magical? The answer is a bit elusive. No, it’s not the softest or the fastest running shoe on the market. But it makes a very good attempt and add to that, it will last for 800+ kilometers. So, it’s certainly one of the most practical tempo shoes out there. Whether it’s magic, I’ll leave up to you.
