It's rare for a new shoe to make such a significant entrance into the market as the original did in 2020. It quickly became known for being bouncy but slightly unstable. Years later, the Novablast series has undergone significant changes, and this year’s version is no exception.

Let's just state upfront that is a world-class training shoe for daily use. There’s no doubt about it. I’ve compared it directly with some of the best shoes on the market right now, and this shoe not only competes but often surpasses its rivals from other brands.
Not only does the Novablast line excite running enthusiasts, but I’m also convinced that ASICS Novablast 4 could be the ideal shoe for beginners who are new to the running world and want a versatile shoe that excels in various aspects.
A shift towards comfort - ASICS Novablast 4
Looking at the specifications for ASICS Novablast 4, it’s clear that there’s been a deliberate change to make it more of a comfortable daily training shoe than the lighter daily trainer/tempo shoe that ASICS Novablast 3 was.
The first sign is the new woven upper, which offers an extremely comfortable yet secure fit around the foot. It's not as stretchy as a knit upper but feels slightly more comfortable than the previous mesh upper from ASICS Novablast 3. The overall feel of the upper is good comfort without being excessive. In my opinion, a good balance has been created—neither too much nor too little.
The second sign is the new midsole foam. With an approximate height of 41/33mm and made with the new FFBlast+ ECO foam, it feels noticeably softer than last year’s Novablast 3 with FFblast+. The difference is palpable, and the softer feel will likely provide improved comfort for your long runs on weekends.
Still exciting! - ASICS Novablast 4
Don't be fooled though. Despite the increased softness, ASICS Novablast 4 is still capable of high performance during fast runs. The key is the unique design of the midsole.
ASICS Novablast 4 retains its signature trampoline feel as you transition to the forefoot. The heel is soft and provides a comfortable landing, which continues into an easy and effortless roll forward. This altogether gives the familiar Novablast feel with a good bounce in the takeoff.
I am extremely pleased with how ASICS Novablast 4 feels when I run. It consistently brings a smile to my face every time I put it on. It fits perfectly with my running style, and despite the significant "stack height," I find it remarkably stable due to a new wider platform in the heel and forefoot.
Secure landing - ASICS Novablast 4
Many considered ASICS Novablast 3 almost perfect except for the outsole. The main critique was that the outsole rubber wasn't sticky enough, but it seems like has listened.
The new and softer AHAR outsole (ASICS High Abrasion Rubber) provides runners with significantly improved grip in wet conditions. Given the current weather conditions, we've honestly only had the chance to test it on slick surfaces, so we can confidently say it's a significant improvement over last year’s model.
I think ASICS Novablast 4 is best suited for urban environments and light gravel paths. Although the outsole is improved over last year, it is not designed for true trail running. It retains the same lightweight construction without lugs, so stick to roads to get the most out of the shoe.
Conclusion
I am genuinely convinced that ASICS Novablast 4 is one of the best daily training shoes ever launched, and it is a strong candidate for shoe of the year, just like last year. While all shoes meet some criticism, I think Novablast 4 will receive very little.
In essence, it’s a soft, reliable, springy, light, and enjoyable , which will surely leave you with a wide smile.
