Test: HOKA Mach 6 – Light and Lush!

A perfect mix of old and new

I've tried many different running shoes over the last eight years. Despite this, I still haven't tried any version of HOKA Mach . Therefore, I can't make big comparisons with previous versions now that version 6 is out. Instead, my review will solely focus on how it feels to jump into the latest generation of this lightweight running shoe.

What is a HOKA Mach?

I've heard many definitions of a Mach running shoe, but I've found it hard to classify it in any category. The name " Mach " refers to speed, but the fastest shoes in the world have two things in common, Pebax foam and a plate. Neither is included in Mach 6. The term "everyday trainer" has also been mentioned in discussions about previous versions of Mach, but with such low weight, I've found it hard to believe this, until now.

HOKA Mach 6 is actually a neutral everyday trainer, but unlike the soft and comfortable Hoka Clifton 9, it's a running shoe that performs better at a faster pace.

To be completely honest, I didn't like HOKA Mach 6 after my first run, but there was a reason for this. I ran a slow recovery run, and in hindsight, it's almost as if I didn't give the shoe a chance to succeed.
The next run was markedly different; I did threshold intervals, and my thoughts on the shoe changed dramatically within minutes. Running at higher speeds complements the geometry of the HOKA Mach 6's midsole, improves the heel-to-toe transition, and makes the shoe very easy to run in. From that moment, I knew what HOKA Mach 6 is made for.

A nice roll – HOKA Mach 6

The big news this year is the introduction of a new midsole. Last year's HOKA Mach 5 had a two-layer midsole, while the new Mach 6 has a full midsole of supercritical EVA. An update like this changes some of the shoe's characteristics.

A two-layer midsole usually has a stiffer part and a softer part. In HOKA Mach 5, this resulted in a shoe that was slightly stiffer but had a softer upper layer. HOKA Mach 6's midsole is softer, but not as stiff, resulting in a nice soft roll that feels natural when running faster.

In silhouette, the HOKA Mach 6 doesn't look tall, but looks can be deceiving; it has an impressive 38-33 mm stack height. Despite this high stack, it feels surprisingly stable and is a fantastic option for runners who want a cushioned everyday trainer that gives you the confidence to take quick turns.

HOKA Mach 6 stands out by being classic. Many faster running shoes have incorporated plates, and while many like it, this isn't to everyone's taste. With the new midsole foam and the simple design, HOKA Mach 6 delivers a straightforward, effective running sensation that just works and makes running easy.

Soft and structured – HOKA Mach 6

When we talk about uppers, we often sacrifice softness if we want extra hold around the foot. With the new “Creel Jacquard” upper (a new weaving technique for polyester fabrics), HOKA Mach 6 hugs your foot while still keeping it securely locked. This is due to a two-layer mesh with a soft inner layer and a very thin structured outer layer.

The last few weeks have brought warmer weather, and I've been very pleased with the upper's breathability during the hottest runs.
But it's important to note, I'm not particularly sensitive to warmer uppers, and this is still a two-layer mesh, which could be less breathable than a thinner mono-mesh upper.

My normal size fits me well, but the shoe is borderline shorter, mostly because the width of Mach 6 is a bit narrow around the midfoot. If you're between sizes, consider sizing up.

Overall, the Mach 6 upper is very well-constructed and comfortable. It works great and feels breathable and snug on the foot, the heel has just the right amount of padding for my taste, and the tongue is thin, semi-gusseted, and breathable.

Now with an outsole – HOKA Mach 6

The new midsole has led to another update further down the shoe. While previous Mach running shoes had a harder midsole as an outsole, the new softer midsole requires a traditional rubber sole underneath. I welcome that change.

There's not much to it. With more outsole, you get a bit more weight. Getting a bit extra grip and durability only makes HOKA Mach 6 fit better into the category of daily trainers.

The coverage of the outsole is quite good, and the grip seems to work well. Admittedly, there are limitations to how much I've been out recently in wet weather. We're approaching summer in Europe, and I've had many warm runs.

Who should buy HOKA Mach 6?

There's no doubt that HOKA Mach 6 is a fantastic shoe. I'm surprised how much it feels like an everyday trainer with a very comfortable upper and a nice cushioned midsole, while still saving some performance for quicker days.

HOKA Mach 6 excels as a primary running shoe for those who prefer lighter shoes, or also an excellent tempo shoe for runners who usually run in more cushioned alternatives daily.
While many running shoes incorporate plates, Mach 6 stands out by combining newer midsole technology with a classic design. This makes it an excellent choice for runners seeking versatility in their running lineup or those who don't like running in shoes with plates.

Choosing Mach means choosing a sure – and fast – winner.
