I'm surprised that chose the name: for this shoe. In my eyes (or on my feet), it's a vastly different shoe than before. On could have easily named it something else. It probably deserved a new name, as it's a significant break from their previous models.
On, for once, has used different technologies. Previously, On's shoes almost always had a Speedboard, Helion foam in the midsole, and CloudTec underfoot.
Gone is the Speedboard, and CloudTec is partly gone too. Now has introduced CloudTec-Phase and omitted Speedboard. CloudTec-Phase is a system where On's Clouds collapse differently. On has used a lot of computing tech to find the best cushioning and energy return.
And it works because the shoe rolls well with a push-forward feel. The upper is very light and airy. It feels like having clouds on your feet.
A Masterstroke
aims to be the most exciting shoe I've tried this year. There have been many exciting releases, but Cloudsurfer does many things right. If you've read or seen my other reviews, you'll know I get thrilled if a shoe feels effortless to run in – and Cloudsurfer does just that.
That's what makes Cloudsurfer a masterstroke. The combination of low weight and the right amount of comfort makes it a joy to run in On Cloudsurfer.
Even Among the Clouds, There are Irritations
However, a few small things do bother me. For instance, tiny stones can easily get stuck in the sole. On Cloudsurfer is a city shoe for paved roads, but it's nice to run on a forest or gravel path, and it gets tiresome removing small stones.
The very low weight also has another challenge. I've taken On Cloudsurfer on long runs over 23 km. I have an idea it might struggle for marathons. The midsole gets "tired". For most, this won't be an issue. Just be aware it might not stay lively over 30 km.
Make no mistake. On Cloudsurfer is a fantastic running shoe. It's the best On has made to date, and I find myself using it on many runs.
