TEST: Saucony Hurricane 25 - Looks Deceive

Saucony Hurricane 25 is tough outside, but silky smooth inside.

It was one of the big shoe boxes that landed on my desk at the office in Hadsten when I returned to work after a wonderful, long, and runner-filled summer vacation. When you've handled as many shoes as I have by now, you've also had many boxes pass through – and this one sure occupied the desk. Of course, it was Saucony's stable mileage trainer, Saucony Hurricane 25.

Saucony Hurricane 24 received a thorough overhaul from the previous model – dare I say a rebirth? It was probably one of Saucony's most hyped shoes when it was released last year. Therefore, the expectations were naturally sky-high when I finally slipped into Hurricane 25 and tested them on various surfaces and intensities.

Saucony Hurricane 25 - Comfortable, Dynamic Stability

Recently, I've tested several shoes with pronation support or stabilizing elements – the more modern way to describe the guidance in the shoe. Common among most is that they have become much more exciting to run in than just 2-3 years ago. I think I've thanked before, but I'll do it again. In Saucony Hurricane 25, stability comes from their Centerpath Technology™, which unlike the classic wedge, centers your foot strike more naturally. The midsole follows your foot's movement and centers the foot in a smoother transition, which I've especially appreciated on longer runs.

But it's not only Centerpath Technology™ that makes Saucony Hurricane 25 an outstanding running shoe. Other technologies play a role too. The midsole consists of two types of midsole material, PWRRUN PB and PWRRUN. This isn't unique to this shoe; this dual-layer midsole construction is now used by all brands, and it usually works really well. If you're the type who likes a Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich, you might know what I mean. The PWRRUN material forms the frame for the midsole, the stable foundation, while PWRRUN PB gives the shoe its edge and finesse, ultimately offering a really fun running experience.

Saucony Hurricane 25 - "Don't judge a book by its cover"

Saucony Hurricane 24 was a softie, and we praised it when it was released. We did so because its predecessors were the complete opposite – you know, some of the old pronation shoes we like to talk away from. My experience with Saucony Hurricane 25, however, is that it's a much more versatile running shoe. The midsole is more balanced. So yes, a bit less soft, but much more in harmony, and with an improved rocker geometry, the shoe is nothing short of a pleasure to run in.

If there's anything negative to say about Saucony Hurricane 25, it might be that it looks a bit clumsy. But what do they say – don't judge a book by its cover – and that's exactly the phrase you can take away from this review. Besides, it's undoubtedly a fantastic mileage training shoe.

For sizing, I went with TTS (true to size), which fit my foot perfectly. The shoe leans more towards a narrower fit than the opposite, yet not distinctly narrow. The upper has everything needed for a comfortable run: lots of structure and a breathable material that makes it easy to get rid of heat. The tongue is semi-gusseted, meaning it's not entirely free but held in place by two elastics on each side. Again, a feature that plays into the comfort universe where Hurricane 25, in my opinion, currently stands at the top of the food chain.

Saucony Hurricane 25 - For what?

It didn't take me many runs to know Saucony Hurricane 25 would be a shoe I'd wear out. It'll be for the easy days, for mileage training, to and from work, or for the long run on Sunday where the pace should stay down but comfort up. Hurricane 25 can easily be used by a neutral runner – in fact, I think many neutral runners would benefit from taking some runs in Hurricane 25 during the week.
