TEST: Saucony Triumph 23 - The safe choice

Triumph is Saucony's flagship for volume training shoes, rarely disappointing, and definitely not in this 23rd edition.

Triumph is possibly the most tested shoe here at the office. We've gone through several models (all previous reviews can be found in our inspiration universe). We've sat front row, right next to the driver – in this bus, that's Mr. Triumph. When Saucony presented edition no. 20 and 21, the shoe's character changed. It became more versatile, a bit more energetic – the shoes were fantastic! But they no longer matched Triumph's original form. Edition 22 brought Triumph back to its more comfortable expression, and with edition no. 23, Saucony confirms that this is what we should expect from a Triumph : maximum comfort and durability.

    Saucony Triumph 23 - What's the idea?

As described, Saucony has developed Triumph back towards being a comfortable, stable volume training shoe you can rely on. Looking at the rest of their running shoe line-up, that's what Triumph should be.

How have they succeeded in this mission? They have used some modern tricks, made modern material choices, and generally looked at how trends are developing. And they've done what Saucony does exceptionally well – making really light running shoes . The fact that Saucony Triumph is light for its category makes it stand out compared to others.

Saucony has continued with a stable expression, and the way you do it in 2025 is by making these wide platforms on the shoes. If you're one of those who have kept some of your old running shoes – let's say 10 years old – turn them over and compare the width under the shoe, and you'll be surprised at how much wider shoes are today than back then. It works extremely well. But more shoe typically means a heavier shoe, so it has forced brands to be innovative about reducing the weight of other shoe elements.

And yes, they have succeeded. The midsole material is still PWRRUN PB as in the previous edition – but a lighter version. Saucony has also reduced the amount of outsole material, primarily around the midfoot, which naturally shaves off some weight.

Saucony Triumph 23 - The midsole

As in edition no. 22, you get a full midsole consisting of PWRRUN PB – but in a lighter version than before. Again, Saucony has done a great job keeping the weight low, making Triumph very competitive on that front. The new formulation of PWRRUN PB is softer than its predecessor, without going into the softness category of some New Balance Fresh Foam models. Triumph is more stable than those shoes, which makes it more comfortable on longer runs – which is quite important for this type of shoe.

And speaking of stability, Saucony has also taken a very modern approach to ensure it: by building the shoe on a wide platform, making it suitable for runners who tend to have issues related to overpronation. Don't expect that wow factor when you run in Triumph – you'll find that in some of Saucony's other shoes. Triumph is the stable and reliable training partner that just holds up.

Saucony Triumph 23 - The upper

I've always loved the upper on Triumph, so I wasn't looking here with the most excitement. You might fear it has been restructured – but why should it be? It hasn't, I can reveal. But my experience was still that it had a slightly wider fit than before – especially in the forefoot. Otherwise, a lot of attention has been given to the lining. Your foot is simply enveloped by a lot of soft materials – right from the foam around the ankle to the laces.

Saucony Triumph 23 - Who should consider this shoe?

I've written quite a few reviews by now – and I love it. I keep looking forward to getting new shoes in my hands and following the development. It's been fantastic years on that front. I've also written many times that “everyone can enjoy this shoe” – but I have to repeat myself once more.

Saucony Triumph 23 will be a shoe you'll reach for again and again. It has to be – that's the purpose of this kind of shoe. In many ways, I think you could say Triumph 23 is a blend of the previous three models. It's for the easy days – whether it's long or short runs. It's not a speed shoe, by no means. It's for the days between intervals, for warming up to and from the track – or for you who just want one reliable running shoe and need to go out a couple of times a week for your 5 km jog. For these exact runs, I have no complaints about Saucony Triumph 23.
