Winter is approaching. For some, it means running motivation can really be challenged. Cold, long, and dark days aren't the ideal recipe for a run. But what tools can you use when it takes a little extra effort during these months?
Our elite runner, Jakob Gade, has provided his good and practical tips. Find all his tips and tricks in the article below.
Find a Running Buddy
A deal is a deal. And a deal with a running buddy is a sure thing.
If the couch is calling you too much in the morning or evening, setting up running dates can be a great tool.
A running plan makes it harder to convince yourself that an hour of Netflix is better than the 5 kilometers you agreed on with a buddy. Before you know it, you're on a refreshing run with your mate. And as we all know, you never regret a run once it's done.
So grab a running buddy, or maybe you have a family member who will join you on a bike? It could also be the kids; that way, you spend some active time together.
Prepare Clothes the Night Before
Sure, it can be tough to jump out of bed and run before work. So why not make it a bit easier for yourself? Make it a habit to prepare your running clothes the night before. I practically leap from bed into my gear, and then I'm halfway out the door.
It's a small detail, but it makes a huge difference.
Be Grateful
Gratitude: something most of us could improve on and often forget in daily life. Remember to remind yourself how lucky you actually are: You can go for a run! You have the time and energy to do something good for yourself. It can be an incredibly strong motivator.
Without talking too much about myself, I've experienced, during my runs around the world, people looking amazed as I ran by. Who would spend energy running?
We are incredibly privileged to have exercise as an active choice in our daily lives.
And then there's the injured runner who would do anything to run and use their body for the freedom movement provides. I've spent many hours with sore heels or Achilles tendons just wishing I could do as I please.
So remember: Use that freedom.
Create Habits
Fall/winter might be the hardest time to get out. But try to turn it to your advantage – if you create good habits now, you've laid the foundation for a great season next year. Filled with positive and active experiences. I guarantee there's huge satisfaction in getting through fall/winter without needing to start from scratch when good weather returns early next year.
An extra note here is how wonderful it is to follow nature closely as the weeks pass by.
That's all for now. I hope you all have the courage and desire to get out and enjoy the weather. I'll definitely head to the woods this weekend.
