Admittedly. A solid summer wardrobe for run training mainly consists of shorts and singlets, but due to the changing weather, other garments can be handy. Here's a quick guide on the advantages of different clothing parts, so you can be fully prepped for summer.
Tops
Here are three sleeve lengths that might be relevant, depending on weather and warmth.
Singlet
Perhaps the clothing piece that screams summer and sun the most! The singlet is perfect for sunny runs, typically made of thin material, covering only the essentials to keep you comfy. Ideal for warm days or fast-paced runs.
T-shirt (Short Sleeve)
A t-shirt is an obvious choice for summer runs. I wouldn't choose it for the hottest days, but for a morning run below 20°C, it's perfect. Note, t-shirts vary in thickness and materials with different functions. Pick something light and breathable for summer runs.
T-shirt (Long Sleeve)
“What now!?!” You might think. But yes, it’s actually nice to have long-sleeved t-shirts in your summer wardrobe. Let’s face it; cold, windy days will come. For a calm run on such days, a long-sleeve is really nice.
Bottoms
Shorts, splits, or short tights. All have their place in the summer wardrobe, each in a different way.
Shorts
Shorts are a broad concept, so I'll just discuss classic shorts here – not splitshorts or short tights (those come next). Shorts and summer go together like strawberries and cream, so they must be included. They're light and airy to run in, offering lots of freedom. Available with many pockets and in 2-in-1 versions, with an inner tight under the looser outer part.
Splitshorts
The obvious choice for races or quick runs. They're short, airy, granting lots of movement freedom. Maybe you think they’re too short. But trust me; once you embrace them, there’s no turning back. They're a joy to run in, especially on hot summer days.
Short Tights
When it rarely rains in summer, it pours. And if you’re heading out knowing you’ll be soaked in 2 minutes, it’s nice to wear short tights over shorts. Shorts will stick to your body unpleasantly, increasing the risk of chafe sores. Short tights, however, sit as intended, providing a significantly better running experience.
Socks
Select a thin, sweat-wicking running sock for summer runs. Some prefer socks in thin wool for thermoregulation, but most choose thin synthetic ones to prevent folding and blisters.
Accessories
Common theme here is UV protection - for your head or eyes.
Cap
A cap is great in summer when the sun is strong. It has two functions: shading from the sun and preventing sweat from trickling into your face. The brim helps avoid sunburn and stops you from squinting against the sun.
Sunglasses
It took me a while to embrace running with sunglasses. But I've realized it's really nice. My eyes relax more, and they also shield from wind and pollen, which are great side effects. Furthermore, there's been an increased focus on protecting eyes from ultraviolet rays, and only sunglasses can offer protection.
