How to Keep Running Motivation Through Winter

It's crucial to maintain summer training through winter. Danish marathon record holder Jacob Sommer Simonsen offers tips to keep your motivation up during winter.

A cold morning with gusty winds, pouring rain, and darkness isn't as appealing as a sunrise run in July where shorts and a t-shirt suffice.

For many, the desire and training volume drop, lowering performance levels over the winter. This may lead to injuries when restarting.

The key during winter is to MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY: Avoid injuries, illness, or long breaks from training—always important, but especially in winter.

Here are some tips not just to get you through winter, but to make you stronger on the other side.

Join Running Events

Setting goals helps with regular training. These can be distance or time-based weekly targets or competition goals. The latter is particularly effective.

Spring or summer half-marathons might seem far off, but there are still races and challenges available.

Many running events are available, so choose a few, both road and trail. The aim doesn't always have to be a new record; it can be a good experience, hard training, or gaining experience.

Practice pacing without a watch, train with hydration/energy on longer distances, or strengthen mentally in the terrain.

Run Together

Running events boost motivation because you run with others, so why not make it routine?

Having one or more training partners waiting for you helps, so seek this in your local network.

There are many social running groups, and for more serious training, running or athletic clubs offer personalized training and peer support.

Training with others rather than alone significantly boosts your level. Clubs also provide a strong social community with like-minded people—adding to your motivation.

Don't Let Darkness Stop You

As days shorten, darkness is a natural part of winter running. But it shouldn't deter you. With a headlamp and reflective gear, you can run safely and freely whenever you choose.

Set goals, find running partners, and remember the light. You're well on your way through winter.
