Test: Mizuno Wave Rebellion - Mizuno's fastest running shoe

35% more responsive foam and the built-in Wave Plate are just a few of the features that deserve mentioning regarding Mizuno's new Wave Rebellion.

Mizuno Wave Rebellion is Mizuno's fastest shoe. The design of the shoe incorporates a number of well-known technologies and exciting features. Below you can read about my experience wearing the shoe.

Upper - Mizuno Wave Rebellion

Mizuno Wave Rebellion features a soft, elastic and comfortable mesh. Around the ankle and heel, the shoe is reasonably well padded. The laces are also soft, and as a result you can tighten the shoe easily and comfortably - an important feature for a fast shoe!

Overall the upper provides great comfort, as well as plenty of room for your toes – both in terms of width and height.

Bottom of the shoe

The bottom part is constructed with an 8 mm drop: 28.5 mm below the forefoot and 36.5 mm below the heel. In addition to the drop, the shoe is designed quite an obvious "rocker" at the forefoot, which makes the shoe roll forward well.

Under the midfoot and heel, the shoe has a fiberglass-reinforced "WAVE PLATE". Mizuno's Wave Plate technology is developed with the goal of providing both an even pressure distribution in the landing phase, as well as stability in terms of sideway movements in order to ensure a softer landing and thereby slightly greater forward movement of the foot. When moving forward, the plate allows for more flexibility.

This construction design is one of the reasons why the shoe is tailored specifically for runners, who land on their heel and roll forward over the foot in the classic way.

Midsole - Enerzy Lite

The shoe features Mizuno's "Enerzy Lite" in the midsole, which is a newer version of their "Enerzy" foam. The Lite version of the foam is lighter weight, but also more responsive - Mizuno themselves state that Enerzy Lite is 35% more responsive than their standard foam! If you are used to running in Mizuno, you can expect a significantly springier midsole in the Wave Rebellion.

The rubber compound in the outsole is incredibly hard and durable, featuring lots of sharp edges. The well defined edges of the outsole can almost be said to cut into softer surfaces - such as a forest trails or grass! For this reason, the sole can be used on almost all surface types, as you will always achieve a good grip and high durability on the outsole.

Wearing the Mizuno Wave Rebellion

Mizuno Wave Rebellion is a very lightweight shoe, which is targeted at runners who land on their heel. When landing on the heel of this shoe, you get a super soft and springy landing. If you land on the middle or forefoot, the shoe will feel much firmer and more robust. Both the heel and forefoot seem very stable in terms of sideways movements, and I have personally felt safe in the shoe when dealing with turns, and running on forest trails and gravel roads.

The combination of the springy heel, 8 mm drop and a potent forefoot with an obvious rocker give a pleasant rolling movement from heel to forefoot.

What is the shoe great for?

Do you enjoy running in a lightweight, stable and potent shoe? And do you tend to land on your heel? Then the Mizuno Wave Rebellion is a great choice. It is also evident that the shoe has been designed for the faster part of running training, and can thus be used for everything from speed sessions to interval training and competitions.
