Running gear with wool - Stay warm naturally

Wool for sports works incredibly well, and in recent years, more and more sportswear manufacturers have incorporated merino wool into their products. But what makes merino wool so unique? - and why is it ideal for many sports activities?

Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, where the wool protects the sheep from heat up to 35 degrees and cold down to -20 degrees. Merino wool differs from regular wool as the merino fiber has a thinner diameter, making it softer and more elastic. The thin and elastic merino fiber doesn't itch against the skin, contrary to many myths. Read on here to learn why it can be a very good idea to run with wool!

We've been out to greet some who ditch the winter coat, so we can stay warm on the run.

Wool in a new way

In the production of the Lipati Merino Nuyarn LS Shirt, much effort has been made to find the best way to spin the wool. “The devil is in the details” as they say, and with this in focus, every detail has been optimized in this wool sweater.

The method the wool is spun on is developed in New Zealand. The method highlights the wool's natural properties and stems from traditional spinning techniques. Now the wool can handle moisture and heat better, ensuring you a comfortable run - in all weather conditions.

In clear terms, it can be said very precisely:

With this type of wool, you get

35% more volume: This technique allows natural air pockets to form in the wool, providing more volume, increased wind resistance, and improved thermal regulation.

5x faster dry time. Nuyarn absorbs water before it forms drops, allowing it to pass through the fabric faster and evaporate moisture more quickly.

35% more elasticity. The technique by which wool fibers are woven gives the clothing better elasticity. This results in a noticeably better fit, feeling as if the sweater is woven personally for oneself.

35% better heat regulation. Due to the air pockets that form during the wool's weaving, Nuyarn wool achieves significantly better heat regulation.

53% less air permeability. The aforementioned air pockets and tight weaving reduce air permeability in the fabric by 53%.

50% better durability. As the weaving technique allows for the use of longer wool fibers that maintain their original structure, the fabric becomes more resistant and achieves 50% better durability than other products.

120% stronger seams. When products with this type of fabric were tested, it was found that the seams could withstand 8 kg of pull, compared to 3 kg pull on other wool fabrics.

Wool products in winter

In winter, merino wool provides great warmth, while ensuring the body does not overheat during physical activity. When used as a base layer or mid-layer, active athletes can utilize merino wool's unique temperature-regulating properties, keeping the body perfectly tempered.

The finely woven wool fibers contain and bind a lot of air, helping protect against both heat and cold. Wool can also absorb and hold moisture up to 35% of its weight without feeling wet. This means that when you sweat during physical activity, the wool absorbs and transports moisture away from the skin and into the fiber's air spaces - and uniquely, it continues to warm even when wet.

Even though merino wool absorbs moisture up to 35% of its weight in the fiber, it dries as quickly as synthetic materials.

Merino wool also contains lanolin, which has antibacterial properties, keeping the wool odor-free, even after many hours of use. This makes socks with merino wool very suitable for skiing, hiking, and running, where the foot is often "enclosed" for long periods.

Wool products in summer

In summer, wool also has excellent properties to keep you cool and protected due to its high air content (80% air and 20% wool fibers), ensuring very limited heat exchange with surroundings. The wool helps maintain a stable "indoor climate," preserving a uniform temperature close to the body. Wool effectively absorbs sweat and excess heat, and can actually provide a cooling effect when it's really hot. Merino wool is also tested to have a high UV protection of over UV40+.

Do you need a lot of sweat transport?

When you choose to be physically active wearing wool in winter, the wool’s properties can provide the optimal running experience. But if you are someone who sweats a lot, a wool sweater can quickly reach its max for how much moisture it can release if you have a very tight running jacket on top. Therefore, our recommendation is to wear a lighter jacket in this situation so the wool sweater can better help you release moisture and heat.

Merino wool with polyester blend

Merino wool is very expensive, but to make the most of its good properties, merino wool is often combined with synthetic materials. This not only makes the product cheaper, but it actually provides extra quick and effective sweat transport to the next layer, while exploiting the wool’s heat-regulating effect. If you sweat a lot when you run, it might be advantageous to choose a base layer consisting of a wool and synthetic material blend rather than 100% wool.

In short about Lipati Merino Nuyarn LS Shirt:

  • - Good thermal insulation
  • - Temperature-regulating effect
  • - Natural material
  • - Self-cleaning and odorless
  • - Cooling in summer
  • - Antibacterial properties

Remember to care for and treat wool products properly to maintain their good properties better.

Wash your wool products with wool detergent

With a wool detergent, the wool fibers retain their good ability to remove moisture from the body, and drying time is reduced. Wool wash contains lanolin, which helps preserve the wool’s breathability and flexible properties.

If you wash wool products in the washing machine, always use the "Wool program" or wash them by hand.
