Most runners have a pair of running shorts in their drawer, but are they the right ones? Choosing shorts is more important than you think. Length, fit, and type affect both comfort and performance, whether you're on a relaxed morning run or chasing a personal best.
Here we go through what to look for when choosing running shorts for your runs.
Which type of shorts suits you?
Running shorts (loose)
The classic running shorts are light and airy with good freedom of movement. Most models have a built-in brief and one or more pockets. A good choice for most runs, but on long distances, loose shorts can cause chafing on the inner thighs for some runners. Test them on a shorter run before embarking on the really long ones.
2-in-1 shorts
Two-in-one shorts combine a loose outer short with a tight inner short. It's the ideal solution if you know about chafing or discomfort on the thighs during long runs. They stay stable, don't shift, and provide support without sacrificing freedom of movement. However, they are often a bit warmer than shorts with only one layer of fabric.
Split shorts
Short, light, and with maximum freedom of movement. Split shorts are the natural choice for competitions and runs where you want speed. On hot days, they provide as much ventilation and air as possible.
Short tights
Short tights are an alternative to shorts that suit many runners better than they think. They follow the body's movements and stay in place. If you're one of those who constantly adjust your shorts during a run, short tights are worth trying. They also work well in rain, where loose shorts stick to the legs in a way tights don't. Many models also come with pockets, so you can carry keys or a phone without hassle.
What length should you choose?
Running shorts for men typically come in three lengths:
- 3" (approx. 8 cm) is the shortest variant and offers maximum freedom of movement. Popular among sprinters and those who want as little fabric as possible.
- 5" (approx. 13 cm) is the medium-length variant. Light and airy, and a popular choice for tempo and competitions.
- 7" (approx. 18 cm) is the semi-long variant. Fits well for most runners and runs, and is preferred by many who want a bit more coverage.
What else should you look for?
- Pockets: Do you need to carry a phone, key, or gels? Look for a pocket at the back or side.
- Elastic or drawstring waist: Most shorts have both. An adjustable drawstring ensures they stay put, even when you sweat.
- Material: Opt for technical synthetic fabric that wicks sweat away. Avoid cotton.
Should you wear underwear under running shorts?
It depends on the shorts and you. Many men's running shorts have either a built-in brief or a tight inner short, both designed to replace underwear. The brief provides light support and stays in place, while the inner short in a 2-in-1 covers more and reduces the risk of chafing on the inner thighs.
If you run in shorts without any inner layer, or prefer to choose what you wear underneath, opt for tight-fitting boxer shorts in technical material that wicks sweat away. Avoid cotton. It absorbs sweat and becomes uncomfortable quickly.
