All the shoes featured in this article are outstanding, but how do you decide which one suits you best? They all incorporate some form of super foam, feature a plate, and come at a slightly higher price point compared to your average daily trainer.

Hoka Mach X – Stable, reserved, comfortable

When you hear the name Hoka Mach X, it comes with high expectations for many runners. However, the Mach X isn't as light and agile as its Mach siblings. It appears to draw inspiration from both the Mach and the Rocket X2 midsole, creating a hybrid design that leans towards a daily trainer. It's a running shoe that boasts a similar weight to the Clifton but with a midsole geometry that supports a faster pace.

What you get is a taller shoe that delivers excellent stability due to its wide platform. It offers a blend of stiffness and softness, maintaining a reserved demeanor until you start pushing the pace. The Hoka Mach X provides a noticeable pop, somewhat akin to the firmer pop of the original Saucony Endorphin Speed but in a more cushioned and daily trainer-friendly package. The upper is extremely comfortable, fairly breathable, offers ample toe space, and the sizing is spot-on, making it a versatile daily choice.

Hoka has truly delivered a standout shoe here, one that lives up to the hype and serves as a reliable training partner for your upcoming races.

New Balance SuperComp Trainer v2 – Soft, bouncy, fun

Last year's big hit, the SuperComp Trainer version 1, in my opinion, fell short of being a "Super Trainer." It was too heavy for faster runs but excelled in slow and long runs. The changes in the new New Balance SuperComp Trainer v2 are substantial, including softer foam, a lower stack height, and a more traditional upper.

From the perspective of versatility and daily training, these improvements make this shoe a much more suitable partner to the New Balance SuperComp Elite v3. The SC Trainer v2 remains wonderfully soft, though not as plush as its predecessor. Most importantly, it's significantly lighter, rendering it versatile, fun, and bouncy enough for nearly any type of run. It's the most enjoyable shoe to run in on this list, provided you prefer a softer, more responsive feel.

adidas Adizero Boston 12 – Stable, nice rocker, high-value option

The adidas Adizero Boston 12 is the most conventional feeling running shoe on this list. With a newly updated midsole featuring more Lightstrike Pro underfoot and the new Lightstrike 2.0 for a softer sensation, it finally earns the title of a "Super Trainer."

While the Prime X could also contend for this spot, the adidas Adizero Boston 12 not only adds diversity to the list but also offers an affordable, high-value option for those who don't want to break the bank. It performs well at any pace but truly shines when you pick up the tempo, thanks to its excellent midsole geometry. The transition from heel to toe becomes smoother the faster you run, making it ideal for runs where you aim to maintain a brisk pace over an extended duration. The upper is thin, breathable, and provides secure foot lockdown, though it leans towards the more static side in terms of adapting to your foot shape.

Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 – Light, soft, bouncy

The Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 became an instant classic and may be one of the first shoes to truly nail the "Super Trainer" category. The third version's midsole is softer and wider, yet it retains its lightweight and speed. Despite its longevity on the market, it remains highly popular, and rightfully so.

There could be arguments against it being a daily trainer, as it feels fast and may not be the best choice for slower-paced runs. However, this depends on your running style. Many runners, including myself, gravitate towards it for faster tempo and longer runs where a higher overall pace is desired.

Puma Deviate Nitro 2 – Comfortable, aggressive, powerful

The final entry on our list is the Puma Deviate Nitro 2, a shoe that sets itself apart. It features a soft and responsive nitro-infused foam but possesses a more aggressive feel than its counterparts. While there are softer shoes in this lineup, it's challenging to find a shoe that can handle a faster pace as effectively as the Deviate Nitro 2, all while offering comfort for slower runs.

Puma has significantly elevated its game in recent years, and this shoe exemplifies what Puma can achieve when pursuing excellence.
