For me,
was close to perfect – or at least as perfect as a first edition can be. I know not everyone shared that view. Some thought the upper was too loose, while others found the midsole too soft and unstable. Taste is subjective, but honestly: this past year, I've struggled to choose other shoes than the speedy
or the extra soft
for my daily runs.
And I'm far from the only one. Most runners I've spoken with – both casual and more experienced – particularly highlight the comfort, cushioning, and the light running experience as something truly special.
How do you take the next step when the first version was already a huge success?
Normally, version 2 means only minor adjustments, as brands typically work in two-year development cycles. But with a new development lab at Mizuno's headquarters in Osaka, the pace of innovation has significantly increased – resulting in a brand new Mizuno Neo Vista 2 with improved fit in the upper and an updated midsole with new foam.
Improved fit – but big in size
The upper has been redesigned from scratch to retain last year's comfort while providing more structure. The most significant change is the fit, which now feels slightly larger – especially in the toe box. I had to go down half a size (from US 11 to 10.5) to get a snug and comfortable fit.
The upper material consists of a combination of breathable mesh, structured side panels, and an elastic knitted overlay across the foot. It provides a soft and airy feel without compromising too much on support and hold. Compared to the previous model, the upper feels thinner but with slightly more structure around the foot.
In the old model, I had to tighten the laces very tightly to get the necessary support – which often resulted in an uncomfortable and crumpled tongue. That problem is solved in the . The lacing system now offers better and more even support without the need for excessive tightening.
Overall, the fit feels more refined: still soft and comfortable, but with improved structure and better breathability. A clear upgrade.
More bounce with new foam!
The biggest difference between 2 and its predecessor is found in the midsole. The "foam – plate – foam" construction resembles last year's, but the new hydrogen-infused Mizuno NXT foam on top makes a noticeable difference in both cushioning and softness. Neo Vista 2 feels softer, more bouncy, faster on take-off – and just more fun to run in.
But here's what some might see as a downside of such a soft midsole. Neo Vista 2 is softer than the original, and has tried to improve stability with a more structured upper and a slightly wider outsole. That said, Mizuno Neo Vista 2 remains not a stable shoe. It would change the whole idea behind the shoe's popularity.
My recommendation for runners needing extra stability is to gradually acclimate the body to the shoe. It's often enough to have a good and secure running experience – even with a soft and bouncy setup. So give your body time! Most can run in any running shoe if patient.
Super trainer!
Mizuno calls Neo Vista 2 a super trainer. But what does that really mean? Think of a shoe that can do a bit of everything: Enough comfort for long runs, good cushioning on tired legs, and sufficient response if you want to pick up the pace. A super trainer bridges the gap between and – and that's exactly what Mizuno Neo Vista 2 does.
It's as soft as a marshmallow on days when you just need comfort. It's light and uncomplicated for long runs, and you can also push the speed without feeling like the shoe is holding you back.
For most runners, Mizuno Neo Vista 2 can be the one shoe that does it all. Personally, I wouldn't use it for race day – but that's because I have a lighter and faster shoe for that purpose. If you only want to own one or two pairs at a time, Neo Vista 2 offers a lot. It's versatile, comfortable, and – most importantly – it makes you smile when you run.
