Nike Air Zoom Pegasus vs. Nike Reach Infinity Run Flyknit

Now the most recent version of Nikes most classic running shoe has just been launched - Nike Pegasus 38.. All features which have had an excellent effect in the previous version have been preserved. But it has also been updated in areas where feedback wasn´t perfect.

Just like I fell head-over-heels in love with Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit 2, I also think that Pegasus 38 is a big hit. The two pairs of running shoes are very similar but differ in terms of being stable/neutral and minimal in terms of comfort as Nike React Infinity has a sligthly more comfortable midsole due to a higher stack height.

Otherwise its two shoes which offer the same running experience and which are suited for the same type of runs - which means all runs. I certainly understand why Nike Pegasus has turned into a classic.

Updates from Pegasus 37 to Pegasus 38

In Air Zoom Pegasus 38, Nike has kept the same great midsole as in Pegasus 37 which can last mile after mile. I.e. it still has the forefoot Air Zoom pillow which is very propulsive.

And of course the React-midsole foam which makes the shoe stable and fast when I am racing, but also soft and comfortable when I have gone out for more easy-going runs.

The previous model, Pegasus 37, was critisized for its fit which simply wasn´t good enough. I didn´t try the 37 but I think the 38 has a great fit. There is plenty of room in the front around your toes and its very easy to tighten the shoe properly with the new lacing system, Wide Strips, so it feels as if it has got a "personal fit".

Pegasus 38 - Updated fit

The Mesh-upper feels comfortable but also light, so it has enough breathability and flexibility for racing. Its really a classic upper for an all-round shoe which is neither too thick or too thin but somewhere in between. In addition I think the new heel cap does a good job. It keeps the heel stably in place and I never experienced that my heel would "slip" which allegedly was a problem in the predecessor.

If you tried Pegasus 37, its probably very obvious that the tongue in the 38´has received significantly more padding and now sits separately from the rest of the upper. I really like the fact that its separate and I think the amount of padding is fine for an all-round shoe.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38 - an obvious choice of running shoe for all runners

Personally, I would probably choose React Infinity Flyknit instead of Pegasus for most runs. Not because it provides the stability I need but because I am a big fan of Flyknit uppers in addition to the slight additional comfort which the shoe provides compared to Pegasus 38. This doesn´t mean that I won´t use Pegasus 38. I certainly will use it for pacy runs as the Air Zoom forefoot pillow provides extra propulsion.

In total I think, Pegasus 38 is a really good running shoe for the beginner as well as the marathon runner who is looking for a great shoe which will provide plenty of support and comfort, mile after mile. It does all the things its supposed to - really well. Its soft, protective, fast, calm and just really good!
