Test: Nike Pegasus 42 - A new and more fun version of the workhorse

Nike's goal was clear; to deliver everything we love about Pegasus, but in a new and more fun edition.

The iconic Nike Pegasus returns in version 42. Originally created in 1982 (!!), the aim was to make a running shoe that would serve as the "shoe for all runners." Additionally, it had to be affordable and durable. A legacy the new Nike Pegasus 42 still upholds.

Nike Pegasus 42: The workhorse has wings

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 42 is Nike's "Icon." It delivers exactly what one expects from the Pegasus series – but in a version that feels a bit more responsive than previous models. Nike's goal was clear; to deliver everything we love about Pegasus, but in a new and more fun edition.

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed when I picked up the shoe was its lightness. It felt lighter than previous models, and after putting it on and running the first run, the shoe felt light and immediately responsive. The toe box is slightly wider than previous models, which suits me perfectly. I have a slightly wide forefoot, so the fit and feel on the foot were spot on. It made it very comfortable and easy to slip into for almost all types of training. If you loved the previous Pegasus models, don't worry. It's not that Nike has made a toe box that's wildly wide compared to earlier models. However, they have made a bit more room in the toe box, providing a bit more space for the toes.

15% more energy: A legendary experience with full-length Air Zoom unit.

The biggest and most important update in this shoe is that Nike has replaced the two Air Zoom units from the predecessor with a full-length Air Zoom unit. This was done to create more responsiveness, and Nike itself promises 15% more energy return. The most remarkable thing is the balance in the shoe. With a full Air Zoom pod, I was a bit nervous about losing some of the ground feel that you otherwise have in Pegasus shoes and especially the icon. I clearly felt more responsiveness in the shoe, but it was without overwhelming the contact with the ground. There is still the classic Pegasus ground feel – a responsive cushioning that doesn't become too soft or mushy.

This makes the shoe versatile:

  • Stable and comfortable on easy runs
  • Lively enough for progressive runs
  • Usable for lighter tempo if you want to avoid carbon plates

The midsole, besides an Air Zoom unit, consists of ReactX foam, which together with the Air Zoom unit provides a responsive and playful experience. Nike has also chosen to update the upper on the shoe, making it more breathable and ventilated.

Usage

Pegasus 42 functions as a true do-it-all shoe, especially for runners who don't want too much foam but want a slightly more aggressive shoe that is still responsive. It is suitable not only for daily runs but also for warm-ups, drills, and strides, where a natural and controlled ground contact is needed. Conclusion It's a shoe with modern and exciting technology, but without tipping over and becoming too much. Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 42 hits a truly well-balanced combination of comfort, response, and ground feel, making it a reliable partner throughout almost the entire training week.
