Running shorts for women: Find your perfect type

High waist, loose shorts or short tights? We guide you through the types and what to look for, so you find a pair that fits you

A good pair of running shorts should fit right from the first to the last kilometer. But with so many types, lengths, and fits, it can be hard to know where to start. High waist or low? Loose shorts or tights? With or without inner shorts?

Here we go through what to look for when choosing running shorts for your runs.

Which type of shorts suits you?

Classic running shorts

Classic running shorts are light and airy, offering good freedom of movement. The fit varies greatly from model to model in waist, hips, and thighs. So it's worth trying several models before finding your favorite. Some models have a light lining or brief, others don't. For some, classic running shorts may tend to ride up the thighs, so test them at home before heading out on a long run.

2-in-1 shorts

Two-in-one shorts combine a loose outer short with a tight inner short and are a popular choice for long runs. The inner short keeps everything in place and reduces the risk of chafing on the thighs. But there's a big difference in how the inner shorts fit from model to model: how tight they are, how long they are, and how thick the material is. The right choice for you depends on leg length, body type, and preferences.

Split shorts

Few shorts match split shorts when it comes to lightness and freedom of movement. They're made for speed and are a natural choice for competitions and runs where you really want to push it. On hot days, they're hard to beat for ventilation.

Short tights

Tight shorts or short tights are a popular choice for women, and for good reason. They follow the body's movements, stay in place, and solve the ride-up issue in most cases. However, there's a big difference between models. Leg length, material thickness, and waist vary a lot. Most models come with pockets, so you can carry keys, phone, or gels without hassle.

What length should you choose?

Loose shorts, split shorts, and 2-in-1 shorts typically come in three lengths:

  • 3" (approx. 8 cm) is the shortest variant and offers maximum freedom of movement. Popular for speed and competitions.

  • 4" (approx. 10 cm) is the mid-length and a popular choice for most runs.

  • 5" (approx. 13 cm) is the longest variant among shorts and preferred by many who want a bit more coverage.

Short tights come in a wider range of lengths from very short models to 8" (approx. 20 cm) and beyond. This makes it easier to find a length that suits your body type and preferences.

Should you wear underwear under running shorts?

Many women run with underwear under their shorts. If you choose to do so, go for functional running underwear in technical material that fits snugly and wicks sweat away. Avoid cotton. It absorbs sweat and quickly becomes uncomfortable during runs.

If you run in 2-in-1 shorts or short tights, some skip the underwear, but it's entirely up to you. You can choose between briefs, hipsters, or thongs and g-strings depending on your preference.
