GARMIN just launched a sensational  GPS-watch made for trail running, ultra running and other outdoor-activities. GARMIN ENDURO is the name of the new watch which is part of the extremely popular Fenix-series. This review will present its features and give you an idea of how it differs from the Fenix-watch and other GARMIN-models.

 

INTRODUCTION TO GARMIN ENDURO 

For several years, the Fenix-series has included GARMIN’s most luxurious watches with new features added continuosly.  GARMIN ENDURO isn´t set to revise that fact - but while Fenix is marketed as a GPS-watch for runners and multisport athletes, GARMIN ENDURO is specifically targeted towards ULTRA-sports athletes. This includes trail runners, ultra runners, mountain bikers, winter sport athletes and in general adventurers who prefer to spend lots of time in nature and want a GPS-watch to match their needs. 

Consequently GARMIN has packed ENDURO with many of the best features from Fenix and added new features which takes the current functions to whole new levels!

EXTREME BATTERY LIFE

GARMIN ENDURO offers first class training experiences and keeps going when others stop! ENDURO has more battery life than any other multi sports watch in the market so you´ll have plenty of workout hours ahead and lots of miles in the bank before you even have to recharge the watch. 

GARMIN ENDURO has a battery life of up to 80 hours in GPS-mode, up to 300 hours in max. battery in GPS-mode and up to 2 months (!) in smartwatch mode with solar charging.

The exceptional battery life makes GARMIN ENDURO perfect for ultra running, trekking and cross country skiing - actually all sports - and outdoor activities which requires a reliable GPS-watch which doesn´t let you down. 

  

A DESIGN FIT FOR ALL WEATHER 

However, GARMIN ENDURO doesn´t exclusively owe its name to its battery life. ENDURO is (like the Fenix-watches) designed with an ultra robust watch case and can withstand almost anything. GARMIN ENDURO is tested against military standards and can withstand a 100 metre water depth. Consequently you can use the watch for swimming and diving - and also use it during the most challenging weather conditions. 

  

ULTRA LIGHT FORMAT 

GARMIN ENDURO introduces a new watch strap which is both light and comfortable and provides plenty of comfort during long workouts and in everyday life. In that way GARMIN ENDURO provides an effortless running - and workout experience. 

GARMIN ENDURO is either available with a stainless steel case or a scratch-free titanium-DLC. The latter weighs only 58 g. and is thereby ultra light and much lighter than Fenix.

  

TRAIL VO2 MAX

In most GARMIN-watches you can track your fitness which in the world of sports is referred to as VO2 max. So far there has been no specific focus on trail and the specific conditions of trail which undeniably will affect your VO2 max differently than regular road racing - however, this is now possible with GARMIN ENDURO, which is the first watch able to measure your VO2 max levels during trail running.  

  

ULTRARUN APP

Using the Ultra Run app, GARMIN ENDURO will time your breaks and you can also record the time spent on fluid stops along the way. 

  

CLIMBPRO TRAIL 

ClimbPro Trail is another feature introduced in GARMIN ENDURO which will greatly benefit trail runners. With this feature you can retrieve information on current and upcoming climbs in reference to gradient, distance og altitude ahead. 

In addition, ClimbPro Trail will provide information on descents in order to direct your attention to and improve your control of the terrain ahead. 

  

GARMIN ENDURO – ADDITIONAL FEATURES

New features are always exciting but in GARMIN ENDURO you also get some of the features which you are already familiar with from the Fenix-series. 

The exchange between new and old features provides the option to dive even further into your data and review your workouts from completely new perspectives.

Among the well-known features, you will find:

  

POWER MANAGER

Power Manager shows how your settings and different apps influence the battery life of GARMIN ENDURO. In that way you can easily get an idea of which features need a lot of battery and adjust your settings to extend your battery life. This is very useful if you are trekking, mountaineering or doing another type of excursion for several days where ultra performance is required from your watch. 

  

MTB DYNAMICS

If you are into mountainbiking, you will no doubt love MTB Dynamics, which i.a provides information on the severity of mountain bike tracks and guideance on how to handle descents on your mountain bike. GARMIN ENDURO uses the measurements to provide a specific score which you can try to top on your next excursion. 

  

PERFORMANCE METRICS

Performance Metrics include several measurement devices to keep you updated on your performance and recovery. This applies to Running Dynamics, heat - and altitude adapted VO2 max, Recovery Advisor among others.

  

RECOVERY ADVISOR

With Recovery Advisor you are guaranteed optimal recovery! After each workout Recovery Advisor will inform you how long you need to recover before your next workout session. Its very smart if you want to make sure (based on the measurements of the watch) that you are adequately recovered and can enjoy max. benefits from your next run.

  

HEAT - AND ALTITUDE ADJUSTED VO2 MAX

Heat and altitude influence your form and your VO2 max. Especially if you work out in hot conditions or high above sea level, you are likely to feel that your body will perform differently than usual. Fortunately GARMIN ENDURO can take these conditions into account and adjust your VO2 max levels accordingly.  GARMIN ENDURO will track your acclimatization to the new environment and inform you when your body is fully adapted to the new conditions. 

  

DAILY SUGGESTED WORKOUTS

If you need help or inspiration to plan your training, then its a good idea to use this feature. You will get daily suggestions and tips for workouts based on your current training load, VO2 max, recovery, sleep and stress level.  

  

MULTI-GNSS SUPPORT

We have probaly all experienced that the GPS-signal can disappear or become inaccurate when we run in the woods. But with GARMIN ENDURO you can access different navigation systems  – GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO. This will give you the option to track more advanced routes where GPS alone is not sufficient. 

  

NAVIGATION WITH ABC-SENSORS

Navigate your route with ABC-sensors which include an altimeter, a barometer and a 3-axed compass. 

The altimeter will inform you about climbs abd descents while the barometer is used to predict the weather. GARMIN ENDURO is also equipped with an electronic compass to keep you updated on your whereabouts and which direction you are headed.

ACTIVITY PROFILES

Sure, GARMIN ENDURO is a watch which brings all trail-enthusiasts to their feet. BUT! GARMIN ENDURO makes it also possible to access a long list of other predefined activities, among those swimming, cycling, hiking, rowing, golf, etc..

The various activity profiles make it easy for you to follow your development and optimize your performance within a certain activity. 

In this way, GARMIN ENDURO also caters to the multi sports athlete who wants a GPS-watch with endless possibilities to plan, analyze and study your training closely. 

  

PACEPRO – YOUR VIRTUAL PACER

PacePro helps you maintain your desired pace throughout your run which is very beneficial if you are doing a half marathon, marathon or ultra running. 

In addition it can be very helpful if you are running a hilly passage with plenty of climbs and descents. When you upload a predestined route, PacePro can guide you (based on the elevation profile) which pace you need to keep at various climbs, flat sections and descents to help you finish in the targeted end time. 

  

Select/create a route> choose your pacePacePro calculates your pace for different parts of the route on the basis of distance and altitude profile among other things GARMIN ENDURO gives you pace guidance so you know  how fast you need to run on a particular stretch all the time. 

You can also set PacePro to a ’negative split’, if you want to do a progressive workout, where you run slow on the first part of your route and increase the pace on the other part. 

  

BACKCOUNTRY SKI

The Backcountry Ski feature keeps you informed of the terrain if you are in snow. It provides specific measurements depending on whether you are climbing or descending a climb/hill. Its very practical in snowy landscapes where it can be difficult to see what hides beneath the terrain. 

  

WRIST HEART RATE MEASUREMENT 

GARMIN ENDURO also features optical wrist heart rate measurement like other GARMIN watches. The watch measures your heart rate during rest and activity and examines how your heart rate varies in order to determine your stress level. 

The optical heart rate monitor can also measure your heart rate in water and you therefore don´t necessarily need to bring a heart rate belt for swimming.

PULSE OX SENSOR

GARMIN ENDURO can measure the body´s ability to absorb oxygen – also called blood saturation. This is very handy in connection wtih altitude acclimatization in relation to mountaineering or alpine sports. 

  

SLEEP TRACKING

With GARMIN ENDURO you can track your training, your recovery status AND your sleep. GARMIN sleep tracking researches how long time you are in light, deep and REM stages of your sleep to make you understand the quality of your sleep. 

  

BODY BATTERY ENERGY

Optimize your body´s storage of energy via heart rate variations, stress levels, sleep and other data to measure when you should work out and when your body needs rest and recovery. 

  

HYDRATION TRACKING

Record your daily intake of fluids as a reminder to maintain your fluid balance. You can set the feature to measure your estimated loss of fluids following an activity and it will adjust your daily target for fluid intakes accordingly. 

  

RESPIRATION TRACKING

Track your breathing during the day, when you sleep and during breathing exercises and yoga activity available via the GARMIN Connect app. 

  

SMART NOTIFICATIONS

Receive notifications of incomings e-mails, messages, calls and reminders when the watch is paired with your phone or another compatible device. In that way you have all the latest updates without having to get your phone out of your pocket or your bag. 

The Smart notifications enables you to use GARMIN ENDURO both as a watch for training and for everyday life. 

  

DIFFERENCES TO FENIX 6

GARMIN ENDURO doesn´t have a topographic map like GARMIN Fenix 6 and GARMIN Forerunner 945. But if you want the unsurpassed battery life, then you should go for GARMIN ENDURO.

However, you can create and download routes for GARMIN ENDURO via the GARMIN Connect app. The route is displayed on the watch with a white background, but you will still be notified when to turn and which direction you should run in order to follow the route. And for the vast majority of runners and exercisers this will be more than enough!
