TEST: Altra Torin 9 - The classic reinvents itself

Altra Torin 9 returns with new midsole material, exclusive Vibram outsole, and lighter setup.

Torin epitomizes what Altra has dominated its market segment with for years. A wide toe box, ZeroDrop midsoles, and shoes that keep fans returning season after season. In this 9th edition, we are treated to some significant updates. Torin is the first to feature the new EGO P35X midsole material, while the outsole is a brand-new rubber blend called Vibram XS DURA – reportedly the first of its kind, designed specifically for road running. Let's get started!

As mentioned, Altra Torin 9 epitomizes what Altra is and represents. Therefore, I think it would be the obvious choice if a more conventional runner considers trying a ZeroDrop running shoe for the first time. Torin 9 is the more democratic choice from Altra's fine range – it's comfortable, light, and with the two consistent Altra characteristics: foot-shaped fit and ZeroDrop.

Altra Torin 9 – New midsole material: EGO P35X

As something entirely new in this edition of Altra Torin 9 , we are introduced to EGO P35X. As a running expert, updated midsoles are something that can keep us awake at night – both positively and negatively. In this case, it's fortunately positive. The material is what you call dual-density, meaning with two different densities – a very modern approach to creating midsoles. The overall feel of Torin 9 is that it is somewhat softer than its predecessor, and this is most evident in the forefoot. This is particularly welcome because in ZeroDrop shoes, there is a tendency to land slightly further forward on the foot. Torin 9 generally feels to offer a smoother transition from landing to take-off, which can be attributed to the new EGO P35X. Torin 9 has become lighter, partly because the midsole has actually gone from 30mm to 28mm – which somewhat goes against the trends the market is otherwise developing on. But Altra has never been afraid to do things differently! Despite this adjustment, the midsole still feels more cushioned than before. The foot-shaped toe box is not accidental in this context – when the forefoot is more bouncy, you need the toes to spread freely and actively contribute to the take-off. And Altra's FootShape toe box gives you exactly that opportunity.

Altra Torin 9 – Foot-shaped classic

The upper is automatically always a bit extra interesting at Altra – naturally because it fits more foot-shaped and is constructed based on the foot's anatomy. And if you haven't tried it before, it's time now. The material in the upper is an updated breathable mesh, while Altra has fine-tuned the space around the heel for a better lock-down. I think it has succeeded, and you are met with the immediate 'aah' feeling when you place your foot in Altra Torin 9 .

Altra Torin 9 – Vibram's first road-oriented outsole

Vibram has for many years been known as one of the best outsole manufacturers on the market, and the collaboration with Altra has really worked well. From the outside, you can see this new outsole as a kind of tribute to that collaboration. It is the first outsole from Vibram constructed specifically for road running, and I imagine Altra is extremely pleased that it is on one of their shoes. In practice, the outsole excels by being very durable and grippy – but without being too heavy and firm, so it doesn't counteract the rest of the midsole's performance.

Altra Torin 9 – A really good update!

After running in Altra Torin 9 , I am left with the feeling that Altra has done a good job updating this shoe. The improvements that have been made all support the shoe's DNA with the foot-shaped fit, and I feel that in many ways, you get a greater return on this fit with these updates. Torin 9 is the obvious starting shoe for new Altra supporters, while for established fans, it will be a very welcome fresh breath. Altra Torin 9 is still your go-to volume training shoe, which in version 9 excels in having a lighter and more lively expression than its predecessors.
