    Comfort in GEL-Nimbus 27

With 2mm added stack height, GEL-Nimbus 27 delivers even more cushioning underfoot than before without adding weight. The result? A supportive and comfy ride, perfect for runners needing extra heel support. While GEL-Nimbus 27 has a new midsole, it still uses the same FFBlast + ECO foam that revolutionized the Nimbus line years ago.

The extra height also slightly changes the shoe's rocker geometry. More foam provides a stiffer forefoot, potentially enhancing take-off, but it can have downsides – more on that later.

    Who should choose GEL-Nimbus 27?

The high cushioning in GEL-Nimbus 27 makes it ideal for two types of runners:

    • Beginners or casual athletes: If you seek a comfy daily training shoe , offering consistent performance and support for everyday runs, GEL-Nimbus 27 is the perfect pick.
    • Experienced runners: For seasoned athletes, GEL-Nimbus 27 shines as a recovery or long-distance shoe on slower days. It doesn’t provide ultra-soft cushioning some seek for recovery, but it appeals to those preferring a mix of softness and stability after tough sessions.

    How good is GEL-Nimbus 27?

Some shoes feel great right away. Others need a few miles to "break in." GEL-Nimbus 27 falls in the latter category. My first run was not remarkable – the shoe felt stiff, which can enhance push-off but also make heel-to-toe transitions awkward and somewhat noisy.

After a second run, it was clear the shoe requires a few miles to settle in. The heel felt softer, the forefoot less rigid, and overall the shoe felt supportive, comfortable, and balanced after just 10-15km.

ASICS GEL-Nimbus 27 is best suited for slow, steady-paced runs such as daily training, recovery, or longer distances where comfort and stability are key. Though not a speed shoe, its stiffer midsole and enhanced rocker geometry are surprisingly effective at moderate paces. The combination of cushioning and rolling efficiency ensures a smooth, enjoyable running experience mile after mile.

Fit and feel of GEL-Nimbus 27

ASICS has focused on making Nimbus 27 both comfy and practical. The engineered mesh upper offers excellent breathability and a snug, yet not tight fit. The shoe is "true to size" (TTS) with ample toe box space – perhaps slightly long, but I’d still opt for my usual size. The heel lock-in is excellent, ensuring a stable and very comfortable fit even on longer runs.

While engineered mesh doesn't contour as much as knit material, the upper balances structure and comfort, making it suitable for various foot types and longer runs needing extra toe space.

Knit uppers and engineered mesh each have pros and cons. While engineered mesh doesn’t feel as soft, it is usually thinner, more breathable, and provides better foot hold. It also absorbs less water in bad weather. Overall, the switch to this new engineered mesh (jacquard weaving) is something I'm fully satisfied with.

Durability and grip of GEL-Nimbus 27

Durability is one of Nimbus 27’s strengths. The thick FFBlast + ECO midsole is built to handle high mileage, while the AHAR+ rubber on the outsole ensures long-lasting performance in high-wear areas. Exposed foam sections might show wear before the rubber, but this shouldn’t significantly impact the shoe’s overall durability.

The grip is generally good, especially after the shift to a hybrid rubber design that combines ASICSGRIP where extra grip is needed and AHAR+ in high-stress areas. More rubber coverage could enhance grip but would also make the shoe heavier. I think ASICS’ design choice here is well-considered.

Comparison of GEL-Nimbus 27 with other ASICS shoes

For runners considering other ASICS options, here's how Nimbus 27 compares:

    • ASICS Novablast 5: Novablast 5 is a more lively shoe thanks to its FFBlast MAX midsole. It suits runners wanting more bounce and response, who don’t mind a less stable run.
    • ASICS GEL-Cumulus 27: Cumulus is a versatile daily trainer with a firmer, lower stack compared to Nimbus 27. It’s a good choice for runners seeking a balance between comfort and response.
    • ASICS GEL-Kayano 31: Designed for overpronators, Kayano 31 offers more stability features while still providing a soft landing. If you need extra support, Kayano is better, but for neutral runners, Nimbus 27 delivers similar comfort without additional foot structure.

    When to use GEL-Nimbus 27?

Nimbus 27 performs well in several scenarios:

    • Long runs: Perfect for cruising at a steady pace, offering a comfortable and reliable ride.
    • Daily training: Ideal for runners who run a few times a week, seeking consistent comfort and durabilityfor daily use.
    • Asphalt and gravel roads: With its breathable upper and exposed foam sections, Nimbus 27 performs best on asphalt and gravel where extreme grip isn't necessary.

    Conclusion

ASICS GEL-Nimbus 27 builds on the series' strengths and continues to enhance comfort. While it's not the softest max-cushioning shoe on the market, its balance of comfort, stability, and versatility makes it an excellent choice for both casual and experienced runners. Whether you're logging recovery miles or cruising through long runs, Nimbus 27 is built to keep you moving with comfort in every step.
