The first received mixed reviews. Many liked it for being light and fast, but some felt the midsole wasn't soft enough. This second version, ASICS Magic Speed 2, seems like has listened to the feedback from the first and now made a shoe that remains fast while being softer and bouncier.
Overall, I think has done a great job. The new FF Blast+ foam ASICS has added performs wonderfully, and they have included significantly more foam than before. Combined with the slightly less stiff carbon-infused plate in the midsole, the shoe feels less aggressive than the first but just as fast.
However, during my initial warm-up kilometers, I couldn't really feel it. It didn't feel softer or bouncier. I was a bit nervous about how my training session would go. But my doubts quickly disappeared. When you pick up the pace and press the shoe down, it comes alive, becomes faster, bouncier, and more exciting.
ASICS Magic Speed 2 – Sensible and fast
And it's indeed a sensible tempo or racing shoe. There are faster and softer shoes, but with 2, you get a shoe that I expect can last about 800 kilometers without wearing out, and it feels quite close to the very best racing shoes.
So what can the ASICS Magic Speed 2 do? Well, it's quite light – it only weighs 230 grams in my size (42.5 EU – US 9). It's made with a soft and bouncy FF Blast+ foam material. It's one of the liveliest and bounciest foam materials on the market now, excelling because it's fresh, fast, and quite durable. The drop has also been increased to 7mm, up from 5mm in the first version, and there's more foam underfoot.
Additionally, it features a new improved upper that is breathable and ensures your foot is secure. It resembles the upper on the first , but it's a bit more roomy in the forefoot. The outsole is made with rubber in selected areas to provide grip and durability. Where there’s no rubber, the midsole is exposed, leading to some wear there.
ASICS Magic Speed 2 – Is it for you?
has also included its Guidesole geometry in the . This technology is their take on a rocker, helping you tilt forward as you lean in the shoe, aiding an easier stride.
I think it's a very sensible for all runners looking for something light, fast, and durable. If you want a fast shoe that is solid and has perfect fit control, consider ASICS Magic Speed 2. I plan to use it for tempo runs in the coming months.
Returning to the initial question, is ASICS Magic Speed 2 real magic? The answer is mixed. It's not the softest or fastest running shoe on the market. But it makes a strong attempt, and it’s expected to last 800+ kilometers. So, it's one of the most sensible tempo shoes around. Whether it's magic, I'll leave up to you.
